I’m Not a Moron. I’m a Cyclist with the Same Rights You Have
I’m Not a Moron. I’m a Cyclist with the Same Rights You Have.
I’m tired of being shouted at from car windows or treated like I don’t belong on the road—just because I choose to ride a bicycle.
Let’s be clear: bicycles are recognized vehicles under the law. I have just as much right to use the road as you do. You may not like it, but that doesn’t make it any less true.
I ride for a lot of reasons — it’s healthier, better for the environment, and honestly, it brings me peace. I’m not trying to slow you down. I’m just trying to get where I’m going, just like you.
So if you see me out there, you don’t need to yell, honk, or swerve toward me. Just pass with care and move on. You drive. I ride. We can both get there safely.
🚗 For Drivers: How to Keep Cyclists Safe
- Obey the speed limit. Especially in neighborhoods, parks, and bike-heavy areas.
- Give at least 3 feet of space. More if you can. It’s not just courteous—it’s the law in many states.
- Check your blind spots. Especially before turning or changing lanes. Cyclists are easier to miss than cars.
- Skip the horn. Honking at cyclists usually does more harm than good. It startles us, and that can be dangerous.
🚴 For Cyclists: Do Your Part Too
- Ride predictably. Signal your turns and stay steady in your lane.
- Be visible. Wear bright or reflective clothing, and use front and rear lights at night or in low light.
- Follow traffic rules. Stop at stop signs and red lights, and yield to pedestrians.
- Respect others. We expect it from drivers—let’s show it in return.
Together, We Can Share the Road
If we all take a moment to be more aware and respectful, our roads will be safer for everyone. Whether you’re driving, riding, or walking—everyone deserves to get home safely.
