Let’s get something straight right from the start. This isn’t a list that tells you to wear a helmet or bring your phone. That’s a given.
If you’re reading this, I’m going to assume you’re already riding with the basics:

  • A good helmet

  • Cycling shoes and padded shorts

  • A jersey and gloves

  • A cycling computer or phone to track your ride

But what about the other stuff?
The items you don’t think about until you’re 15 miles from home with a flat tire, sunburned arms, or cars buzzing past you too close for comfort?

That’s what this post is about—the 5 most important items I always take on every ride (no matter how short or long), in addition to the gear above.

These are the unsung heroes that keep me comfortable, safe, and prepared.


1. Flat Repair Kit or Mini Pump

Flats are part of cycling. It’s not a question of if—it’s when. If you run tubeless, carry a plug kit. If you ride with tubes, bring a patch kit or a spare tube. Either way, you need a way to inflate that tire.

2. Sun Protection (Sleeves or Sunscreen)

I’ve had skin cancer, so sun protection is serious business for me. I don’t want to slather messy sunscreen on my hairy arms before every ride. That’s why I wear sleeves.

3. Water Bottle or Hydration Pack

4. High-Visibility Reflective Bands

Visibility isn’t just for nighttime. Even on sunny days, motion catches attention. Reflective ankle or arm bands bounce car headlights and add visibility where drivers are already looking—your legs.

5. Rearview Mirror (Helmet or Bar-Mounted)

A mirror isn’t just for newbies. Being able to see what’s behind me without swerving or looking over my shoulder is a game-changer—especially on busy roads or group rides.

These five items are so essential that I turn around and go back if I realize I forgot one. No exceptions. Forgetting water or a flat kit once was all it took for me to learn that lesson the hard way.
