Cyclists Need to Become Better Ambassadors for the Sport

Image
The subject of cyclists becoming better ambassadors for the sport is near and dear to my heart. So many people hate cyclists because we are perceived as elitist snobs. I think that is an unfair reflection of most cyclists but it is what is it is and it hurts the sport of cycling when we try to get our cities to address better infrastructure for cyclists. It seems like anytime you bring up the need for better or more bike lanes or safer roads with wider shoulders or even building trails for cyclists to keep them off of the road, many people bring up a negative interaction they had with a cyclist and refuse to even think about helping out. This post is about becoming better ambassadors for cycling. Enjoy it and please leave comments below. Cycling is a great way to get exercise, enjoy the outdoors, and reduce your carbon footprint. But it can also be a dangerous sport, especially in cities where there is a lot of traffic. One way to make cycling safer is for cyclists to become better amb...

Why the Bicycle World Reigns Supreme

Image
The humble bicycle is a mode of transportation that offers a unique experience that surpasses all others. The bicycle world has something to offer casual riders and passionate cyclists. Here are just a few of the reasons why the bicycle world reigns supreme: Freedom of Movement:  Cyclists have the ability to navigate through streets, bike lanes, and even off-road trails. Cars stuck in traffic or pedestrians confined to sidewalks do not have that freedom. This freedom of movement is unmatched by any other mode of transportation. Connection with Nature:  The bicycle world allows us to be intimately connected with nature. We immerse ourselves in the beauty of our surroundings when we ride through scenic countryside, explore lush forests, or pedal along the coastline. Health and Well-Being:  Bicycling is not just a means of transportation; it's a form of exercise that brings countless health benefits. Regular cycling strengthens our cardiovascular system, bui...

Promoting Cycling in Cities: Infrastructure, Programs, Incentives, Education, and Events

Image
According to a study by the European Cyclists' Federation, if just 10% of urban trips were made by bike instead of car, carbon dioxide emissions would be reduced by 7%. This is a significant reduction that cities can achieve by promoting cycling as a viable mode of transportation. So, how can cities promote cycling? Here are some strategies that have been successful in promoting cycling in cities around the world: Build bike infrastructure: Building bike infrastructure is crucial in promoting cycling as a safe and practical mode of transportation. Research has shown that people are more likely to cycle in cities that have dedicated bike lanes and separated bike paths (Buehler, Pucher, & Dill, 2016). These infrastructure improvements make it easier and safer for people to cycle, reducing the risk of accidents and injuries. Bike lanes are marked areas on roads that are reserved for bicycles, often separated from motor vehicle traffic by a painted stripe or physical barrier. Prov...
